What should we wear?

Most people dress casually and we encourage everyone to come to church as they are comfortable, keeping in mind that our children often play in the dirt, paint, cook and do other activities that can be messy.

What if we are running late?

That’s ok! We encourage our families to show up real, not ideal. We know it’s not always easy to get out the door on Sunday morning, much less get to church on time!

Another note—if your child tells you they are starving after you’ve left for church, take heart! We have you covered. We have healthy granola bars available (vegan and no-nut varieties, too!). Just stop by the Religious Exploration table in the Social Hall.

Where do we go when we arrive?

Meeting house where the Social hall and Sanctuary are located.

Everyone begins the morning in the Sanctuary in the Meeting House for approximately the first 15 minutes of the service. Families may sit together and children and youth often enjoy sitting with their friends.

Elements of the service before the children and youth are sung out to their classes by the Congregation include lighting the chalice, announcements, singing of a hymn and Words for All Ages, when children are invited to gather at the front of the space to hear a child-friendly story.

After Words for All Ages, the children depart the Sanctuary to meet their Religious Exploration Guides in the Social Hall, who will walk them to their classes.

Parents are welcome to accompany children to Religious Exploration Sessions and stay with them if they choose. Your child is also welcome to stay in the service.

What time does the nursery open and where is it?

Our nursery opens at 9am and is located on the bottom floor of the Religious Exploration (RE) Building. Our loving, professional nursery staff will give each parent/grandparent/guardian a pager that will light up to let you know if we need you to stop by the nursery.

Who will be leading Religious Exploration Sessions?

Volunteers from our congregation nurture and guide our next generation. These volunteers work under the guidance and supervision of our Director of Lifespan Religious Education who plans each Sunday’s activities. There are always at least two adults present with each group of children and youth.

What if we have food allergies?

All religious exploration spaces are peanut- and tree nut-free. Please let us know if there are any other food allergies we need to be aware of so we can ensure the safety of your child.

What if we have special food requirements?

If your child is lactose intolerant, gluten free, vegetarian or vegan, please let us know so we can accommodate these needs.

What does it cost to participate in the Religious Education Program?

There is no fee for our Religious Education program, including childcare during the Sunday service.

All children and youth must be registered for our program so we know how to contact you and to ensure we know how to meet your child’s needs. Registration is quick, easy and free! Click here to register.

Do I pick my child up from class?

Classes end at 11:45am. Parents of children in nursery through 2nd grade are asked to pick up their children from their religious exploration sessions. Students in 3rd through 12th grade will meet their grownups in the Social Hall at the conclusion of their sessions. Of course, grownups are always welcome to join their children in their sessions!

Is it ok to breastfeed in the Sanctuary during the service?

It’s more than ok! You should feed your child when and where you and your child feel comfortable doing so anywhere on the UUI campus.

We welcome any and all questions! For more information, please contact our Director of Lifespan Religious Education, Susanne Hinson-Rieger, at re@uui.org or 317-418-1679.
